Missing brings attention to the Red Hand Movement (MMIW)
Progressive rock band Imaginal Cells will unveil their next single, Missing, as a precursor to their highly anticipated debut concept album, Purified. Missing is a melancholic, mid-tempo rocker that opens with an eerie blend of nocturnal sounds, setting a foreboding and unsettling atmosphere. As a ghostly guitar riff slowly emerges from the distance, the music intensifies into a rolling groove that builds toward a climactic peak, only to abruptly fall away, leaving behind a sparse and desolate opening verse. The haunting vocals, with their breathy, whispering quality, deepen the song’s heavy-hearted mood. The chorus bursts with infectious energy, cutting through the darkness before the track reaches its emotional zenith, featuring a soaring guitar solo by Jimmy Caterine that tugs at the heartstrings, evoking memories of Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. Missing blends elements of classic heavy metal with strong influences from art rock and progressive genres. The song is inspired by the recent efforts of the Red Hand Movement, which advocates for justice and awareness around the disproportionate rates of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW).
“I didn’t know how to approach such a sensitive subject,” said vocalist Ethan Foxx. “But it felt right to take the listener on an empathetic journey of heartache and loss, to miss someone terribly and be left with only questions.”
The music of Imaginal Cells is rich in organic tones and textures, made in the spirit of their favorite classic albums. Utilizing a sonic palette layered with vintage sounds and lush vocal harmonies, Imaginal Cells cites such iconic bands as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Iron Maiden and Pink Floyd among their many influences. Imaginal Cells’ sociopolitical commentary evokes bands of a similar bent such as Megadeth and Rage Against The Machine.
Missing is the fourth single in the buildup of the highly anticipated release of Imaginal Cells’ self-produced concept album Purified, available November 2024.
